I ran some test comparisons between my two Elan 7s and another camera body
whose meter I consider "correct", or more appropriately, calibrated to my
style. One problem is the Elan 7's meter is about 1/3-stop different. So
in addition to the background brightness over influencing the meter, th

underexposed portraits. Even using +1/2 and evaluative metering, it was a
persistent problem. The lighting was contrasty, mainly my subjects in
shade with sunlit backgrounds or in shadowy sunlight. My feeling is the

Before dropping the subject, I just want to say that before slamming a
film, I think we should all know a little more about it, and what it's good
at and what its weaknesses are. If you're saying Kodachrome 200 is grainy,
you probably aren't using it for its strengths. Kodachrome 200 requires

E100VS is about the worst film I've ever used. The colors made me ill,
were totally inaccurate, and it really lacked any sharpness. Fuji can
definitely do better and take that market. Just my opinion though.

Never being afraid to be the odd man out, for portraits I like Kodachrome
64 with a Heliopan 81A filter. It has to be a Heliopan 81A filter, which
are a little stronger, but just the right tone. Kodachrome 64 is
reasonably flat, making it a nice portrait film.
RMS numbers I find close to use

I find B+W and Heliopan circular polarizers are much more neutral than
Tiffen, a major factor if you shoot chromes. Typically Heliopan circular
polarizers are less expensive than B+W, especially the slim ones, and are
calibrated (have index numbers) for rangefinder use.

The "Hi-Speed" of the Maxxum 80-200mm f/2.8 G isn't any special
technology. It's just a re-geared version of their original lens. The
Maxxum 7 cranks it into focus fast. I would imagine a USM or SW motor
would be slightly faster. The best thing about those is they're quiet. I

The best thing about Minolta is the Maxxum 7. This is one great
camera. I've never seen such a sophisticated camera be so simple to
operate. The lenses are excellent, but you don't get USM, IS, or some of
the selection.
The best thing about Nikon is the eye relief and lots of pro lenses.
