As I mentioned earlier, I know of one case where a person 
went back to eos50 because eos3's af couldn't lock on fast 
enough when 75-300 was used at 200+mm range (when minimum 
aperature got over f/4). So if one can't or doesn't want to
invest on fast (L) glass, I'd say one should ask eos3 for
test run and see how it works. 

don't know how it is with eos 1v, but with eos30 I'd
ASS-U-ME it being body aimed to general consumers (not pros)
and because of that the central sensor would be cross type
even at f/5.6. But again, this is just my assumption and
you know how it goes.. ("when you assume, you make ass out 
of U and me")
