Indeed, as Diamandis observed at last year's Space Access, most everyone
agreed that the Orteig Prize for transatlantic flight would be won by
Admiral Byrd, that dark-horse entrants with much smaller resources (like
Lindbergh) had no chance... until Byrd crashed on takeoff and was out of
the race.
