distribution based on ESS 18.10.2. (Annoying since I stay on 27.2 precisely to
work with Sweave files the classical ESS way.)

I can't test as I don't have an M1 Mac available.
Did you try David Caldwell's "bare" binaries: https://emacsformacosx.com. Those
are the binaries my distribution is based on.
