mke2fs
so... lets say i want to wipe out my windows partition, format it for
linux, and it live as /dev/hda1, i would:
mke2fs /dev/hda1

I think VMware has a free trial, so you could try that. If
you're running programs that will only work with direct access
to hardware, then don't use either. Otherwise, for programs
like MS-Office and programs that don't have a lot of "vxd's"
I'd choose win4lin. On a fast enough machine, maybe

is mke2fs what you are looking for? This will create a ext2 file
system.
