A better way is to run this command. It leads you through a Q&A
session about y
what's the output of uname -a?
ls -l /etc/X11
should give you some idea.
If you've got the full GNOME environment
you can run gnome-display-preferences from the command line
on Ubuntu it's a menu item under System>Preferences>Screen Resolution

Unfortunately, neither file is in that directory or listed in the
whereis. Yes, I ran updatedb to make sure.
Any other thoughts? Is there a tool that I can use besides the
XF86config tool??? I was hoping for something in the gui.
