As far as I know, Debian does not install a firewall by default.
However, you can always check with "iptables -L".

there is a step where you configure the mailserver to a profile which
defaults to send-only
If it's just the MTA not listening, then you change the MTA's configuration
(/etc/mail/exim.conf? (don't have a debian system handy to check))
