The question I was addressing was specifically hydrogen from natural gas, but H2 certainly can also be generated using RECs (the Cal State L.A. fueling station does that), or from solar, or wind. Within a couple of years in California, renewable hydrogen will make up over 40% of the pumped H2

I'll add: while it may be true that hydrogen for fuel cells comes from methane generated by anaerobic fermentation, that is irrelevant. Why? Because, even with the enormous mountains of waste we produce, that can only produce a small percentage of the hydrogen needed to power all the vehicles
