DETROIT -- Chevrolet will begin selling the Spark EV in Maryland this
spring, its first East Coast entry and third state overall since the
electric minicar was launched in California and Oregon in 2013.

Chevy is targeting Maryland in part because it is a "strong commuter market"
with relatively widespread charging infrastructure, General Motors said in a
statement coinciding with this week's auto show in Washington, D.C.

Sales of the Spark EV, which goes an estimated 82 miles on a single charge,
totaled 1,145 last year, up 87 percent over a partial year of sales in 2013.

“The Spark EV has been one of the most well-received electric vehicles in
the industry," said Steve Majoros, Chevy's director of car marketing, in a
statement. "Customer demand helped make the decision to expand its
availability to Maryland.”

The 2015 Spark EV has a sticker price of $27,645. After a $7,500 federal tax
credit and Maryland state tax credits, the net price will be less than
$18,000, GM said.

Dealership service technicians must complete Chevy's service-training
certification before the store can be authorized to sell the Spark EV, GM
said.

A spokeswoman said any Maryland Chevy dealership that invests in the tooling
and service certification will be able to sell the Spark EV. She said most
that have expressed interest so far are in the Baltimore area.

As of now, the Spark EV is GM's only pure EV. (The Chevy Volt and Cadillac
ELR are plug-in hybrids). It's likely to be joined in 2017 by a production
version of the Chevy Bolt [EV], a concept shown at the Detroit auto show
that GM officials said will go about 200 miles on a charge and cost around
$30,000 after tax incentives.

GM global product chief Mark Reuss said Chevy might keep both EVs in its
lineup should the Bolt go into production, which is widely expected.

"There will be an overlap there. I'm not sure it will replace it, because I
think we've got a great car with the Spark (EV)," Reuss said at the auto
show last week.

The Spark has an EPA rating of 119 mpg-equivalent in combined city and
highway driving.

The car's drive unit and GM-built electric motor -- assembled at its plant
in White Marsh, Md. -- generate 327 pounds-feet of torque, launching the car
from 0 to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds.

The Spark EV has three charging options, including the industry's first use
of [L3 combo] DC fast charging, which replenishes 80 percent of the battery
in just 20 minutes.

General Motors Co. said Thursday it will sell its Chevrolet Spark EV in
Maryland beginning this spring, bringing the electric car to the East Coast.

The all-electric Spark went on sale in June 2013 and currently is sold only
in California and Oregon. Spark EV sales totaled 1,145 last year, up 86.5
percent from 2013.

“The Spark EV has been one of the most well-received electric vehicles in
the industry, and customer demand helped make the decision to expand its
availability to Maryland,” Steve Majoros, Chevrolet director of car
marketing, said in a statement.

The Chevy minicar delivers 82 miles of city/highway electric range.
