But here’s a new type of rage at the more genteel end of motoring: at the electric vehicle charge point. How is this? All those drivers who have chosen to go green with either electric cars or plug-in electric hybrids are all searching for places to recharge their depleted batteries. According to Ecotricity – the green energy company – the number of electric vehicles recharging with green electricity from the wind and sun has soared by nearly 1500% over the past 12 months at the 180 fast charging stations covering 85% of the motorway network. So there is competition for the green go juice. It is this that is leading to what is being termed ‘charge rage’. “We now have over 10,000 plug-in electric vehicles on Britain’s roads and around 800 new members joining the Electric Highway every month,” commented Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity and the Electric Highway. “Firstly, without doubt the biggest problem that electric motorists have encountered, is drivers of cars with internal combustion engines unknowingly parking in charging bays – it’s called ICE-ing. “This rapid increase has flagged up the need for cooperation between motorists at the electric pump. So we thought it was time to propose EV etiquette when using the Electric Highway. “Secondly, there are some cases of EV drivers leaving their cars parked at the electric pumps, after they’ve completed their charge. “But in general, drivers of electric cars tend to be thoughtful and considerate folk and our proposed rules of etiquette are simply to ensure the charging process is efficient and hassle free.” Six tips to avoid charge rage 1. Don’t park petrol/diesel cars in charging bays designated for electric cars It’s called “ICE-ing” – parking an Internal Combustion Engine car (Petrol, Diesel or LPG) in designated electric vehicle charging bays. It’s never acceptable, no matter how crowded a car park. 2. Don’t unplug another electric car while it is charging The basic rule of thumb at a charge point is first come, first served. Never remove a connector from another electric car during a charging session, as this may result in damage to the charger and/or car. 3. Don’t hog a charger: charge up, move on Electric Highway rapid chargers are designed to do exactly that – deliver a rapid charge – in no longer than 30 minutes … charge up and let someone else use it. 4. Help fellow electric car drivers to charge If you arrive back at your car to find another EV driver has left a note & number, it’s good form to simply drop them a polite “Charge session completed, thanks” text. 5. Notify the charge point operator if a charge point has a fault Most faults can be identified remotely by the Electric Highway team – but some, like vandalism, cannot. So let the Electric Highway know so they can fix the fault. 6. Set a good example Please be polite to all drivers – EV, Hybrid or ICE. You are ambassadors for the uptake of electric vehicles.
