The Silicon Valley home builder is so enthusiastic about electric vehicles that he now installs a recharging station in the garage of each of his properties. ] SAN JOSE,CA, United States Manmohan Mahal takes the green philosophy very seriously and has fun at the same time. The founder of SIDCO, a company that builds energy efficient homes in the Silicon Valley, Mahal has earned buzz for his novel marketing idea: Buy one of his homes, and get an electric vehicle in the garage. Earlier this year, Mahal, 63, completely remodeled a four-bedroom home on Koch Lane in San Jose’s in-demand Willow Glen neighborhood. After adding unique “Build It Green” specifications on the property — such as double pane windows, LED lighting throughout the house, wired cable and Internet in each room, a wi-fi-powered garage door opener, water-saving toilets and showerheads, a radiant plywood roof to conserve energy, sheetrock insulation and solar panels provided by Solar City — Mahal put a cherry on top by including an electric vehicle charging station, compatible with Tesla Model S, Nissan Leaf, and other electric vehicles; and a three-year lease of a new Tesla Model S sedan. According to the Zillow listing for the home, Mahal bought it in November for $690,000. After his high-tech upgrades, the home sold recently for $1.3 million. The energy output of the home will likely be offset by the solar energy generated from the panels, creating a net-zero home, said a SIDCO spokesperson. “My whole purpose in doing this was to get my vision out,” Mahal told India-West by phone July 19. “I am promoting electric cars, solar panels and electric efficiency for the next generation.” One of Mahal’s goals is to make solar power a key component in more home construction projects, he said. “There is an abundance of solar power here,” he said. “I plan to talk to (San Jose city leaders) to make sure that every new home construction will have solar panels and/or car charging capabilities.” A fan of the Tesla luxury electric car, Mahal attended the Teslive conference in San Jose July 12-14 and is the only Indian American in the event’s Founders Circle. He recalls recently meeting the founder of Tesla Motors Inc., and chairman of Solar City, Elon Musk, and coming away inspired and transformed. Mahal, who came to the U.S. from New Delhi in 1972, is notable for something else as well: he was the recipient of a heart transplant 20 years ago at Stanford Medical Center. “I wouldn’t be able to do any of these things I’ve done without being a part of the donor family,” he said. “I’m a young at heart man!” [@ indiawest.com] For all EVLN posts use: http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/template/NamlServlet.jtp?macro=search_page&node=413529&query=evln&sort=date Here are today's archive-only EV posts: EVLN: Hey, Are You 'The Electric Generation' ?
