ABOUT THE COMEDIANS
In The Comedians, Billy Crystal plays a comedy legend who is reluctantly
paired with Josh Gad, an edgier up-and-coming star, in an unfiltered,
behind-the-scenes look at a fictional late night sketch comedy show where
egos and generations collide. Stephnie Weir stars as “Kristen Laybourne,”
the anxiety-ridden producer behind The Billy & Josh Show who frequently
finds herself caught in the middle of Billy and Josh's arguments, Matt Oberg
stars as “Mitch Reed,” the show’s head writer, and Megan Ferguson stars
“Esme McCauley,” a no-nonsense production assistant. Together they spend
most of their time managing the egos of their two stars and the generational
divide that keeps them from ever fully seeing eye-to-eye.

The Comedians
Season 1 Episode 8 “Charity”
Directed by Larry Charles
Written by Matt Nix, Ben Wexler, Billy Crystal, Josh Gad
Starring Billy Crystal, Josh Gad, Stephnie Weir, Max Oberg
FX Air Date: Thursday, May 28th, 2015 10pm

After a very reserved and almost heartwarming episode of The Comedians last
week, we return to crazy Seinfeld-ian humor on this week’s show. Take a
typical ordinary situation, throw some lunacy into it, and it creates some
truly awkward and often hilarious comedy. For example… this week’s The
Comedians on FX. All Josh Gad wants is to bed the hot barista (Olivia Taylor
Dudley). All Billy Crystal wants is to save face and appear to be the
virtuous elder statesmen. To quote The Rolling Stones, “You can’t always get
what you want.”

When hearing that the barista (whose name we never learn) is a member of FPE
(Free Planet Earth), Josh gleefully spouts his love of the Earth, assuming
it’s an environmental charity. You know what happens when you assume… Billy
meanwhile enjoys showing the camera just how generous he is with a local
homeless man, leading to a great scene where he tries to casually give away
$20 onscreen only for the guy to blow up that spot quickly.

Kristen (Stephnie Weir) has to be one of TV’s most awkward characters, and
Weir plays her so straight that you question what she’s like off camera. In
tonight’s show, she’s mourning the loss of her incontinent old dog, as Billy
is trying to push for a charger for his electric car.

This leaves Billy in the position of trying to ask for something from the
person he’s comforting. When he leaves with some of the dog’s ashes (yeah)
on his shirt, he tries making light of the situation. “Come on boy. I’m
gonna take him for a walk around the studio.”

One thing the show has done is subtly shown Billy Crystal’s sense of
entitlement. Because Gad is louder, younger, and more overt in his humor,
Billy sometimes slips under the radar. His treatment of the show’s
underlings is reprehensible, and yet because he’s reserved and dignified
about it, we overlook it. The scene involving Mitch (Max Oberg) and his new
chair, is one I can totally see happening.

The sketches in between cuts are getting better and better, and I really
feel like I would be watching The Billy and Josh Show if it were actually
on. The charity event goes as disastrous as you’d imagine. I won’t spoil it,
but let’s just say maybe the tuxedos… weren’t necessary.

The Comedians new episode “Charity” debuts tonight at 10pm ET on FX.
