Thanks Alan for reminding me of the anti-theft mods that rentals have to have to stay in business.
Previously while at the StanfordU campus checking on their public EVSE, so as to keep plugshare.com listing up to date, I was able to nab a moment of a Zipcar renter's time to ask questions. I kept it brief as most Silicon Valley types are hyper/go-go-go. But he let me know of the a three way method to keep the Zipcar accessible only to renters (a rfid card system, codes, etc.). For those that do not know, rental cars are a target for thieves. Aug 21, 2014 - This is the stolen Car2Go that was used as a bank robbery getaway vehicle That type of electronic-circuitry & wiring anti-theft protection I saw would need to be defeated if Car2Go sells their EVs to the public. Lets assume that if Car2Go's parent company Daimler plans to repurpose the Smart EVs, they would also have-to defeat that anti-theft circuitry to make those EVs usable. So, I am going to assume, if and when Car2Go offers to sell their Smart EVs to the public, they have their anti-theft devices defeated.
