Josh,
FWIW, we have a few libraries that also make use of "same day" checkouts
for these types of items like Jeff describes. It's simple, and I haven't
heard reports of problems with it.

Jeff, thank you very much for letting me know about this behavior. We just
tried it out and this seems like the simplest solution to get us most of
the way there.

Hello Ruth, We are not sure we need most of the booking features, so we
looked at it but then sort of disregarded it.
1. We are not going to allow holds or reservations, just first come
first serve.
2. We don't have multiple types of laptops, just the same setup for each
location.

Josh,
Would it possibly be easier to use the booking module for this?

Hello, we are looking at circulating laptops for in building use only,
and are looking into options for how to handle the checkout timing.
We would like to check out each item until the end of the day. So if a
branch closes at 9pm, then we would always set the due date to 9pm for any

You can use action triggers to send emails and/or SMS text messages to a
patron when a hold is cancelled, and you can also use them to add messages
to a patron's account that they see in the OPAC.
You can set different messages based on the triggers

Seems like this is something that could be set up using an action/trigger. To
have the “re-request” option, there’d likely need to be some deeper involvement
to query recently cancelled holds and also provide appropriate links for
replacing the hold.

Would it be possible to have a message pop up to alert a patron when a
recent HOLD has expired or been cancelled. It might say something like: A
recent HOLD has been cancelled by you or the system because it was not
picked up on time. Do you want to re-request it?"
It would be really cool if it
