Just as I was about to pipe in and say i've got the same problem, i ran
Red Carpet and there's a new gnome-spell that seems to fix this... At
least it did for me and i was seeing exactly the same behaviour as
Scott. I'm running RH7.3 and ximian gnome desktop.

I re-created the problem and sent a bug report. After that I thought of
trying something. I de-installed gnome-spell. Then I went back into
settings and turned off spell check. Then re-installed gnome-spell.
This time it did not crash but I have no language to select for spell
I haven't heard any other reports. Please file a bug report with a
stack trace at http://bugzilla.ximian.com/
