That is, if you changed the cell format to "long Date" would
today's date change to:
Monday, March 04, 2013
??
If so, then the values in column A are numbers.
(Excel Dates are the number of days since 1/1/1900)
So, =MIN(A2:A99) would

the =min() function would give you the minimum date.
are you trying to say that you want the minimum date that has the name that
matches the value in C2?
