The only way to check the dates blocked out is to open the calendar from
Public Folders.  One work around is to create a mailbox, share the Calendar
and give delegate access to an admin in the group.

I think you meant that it is currently not showing any free/busy information
as opposed to showing as free.

to showing appointments as busy, at present it defaults to free. I have
