Sending SMTP remotely

Are there any issues (or special tricks) to use Pocket PC 2000 on an HP Journada when sending mail remotely? I have a remote IMAP4 user who can pick up his mail fine, but mail never leaves his outbox. In Exchange SMTP protocol logs, I see his connection and HELO Inbox, followed by 250 OK, but
