Directed at anyone running Exchange VMs with Symantec BackupExec.
We have 2 Exchange 2010 SP1 virtual machines on VMware hosts with a DAG
set up between the two. We're using Symantec BackupExec on our current
Exchange 2003 server (non-VM, actual box of metal) to perform our
standard vanilla
This sucks. :(

Me either:)
It's a different version of BE of course but we're backing up just Exchange
bits, not the whole thing.

Installed netbackup client
We're running BackupExec 11d not NetBackup, with a 11.0.7170 client on
the Exchange 2003 box. But couldn't a virtual server with Exchange be
backed up the same as if it was on a metal-box server? The backup server
will see the virtual server as just another box of metal.

You are correct; the Exchange agent doesn't care if it' virtual or physical.
However, check the compatibility list as 11d may not support Exchange 2010.

Yes, it can. And on Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 I would recommend you do
so. (That is, back up Exchange, system state, and everything.)
With Exchange 2010, pretty much all configuration information is stored in AD,
making server recovery trivial (on dedicated Exchange servers).

Thanks everybody. I was pretty sure I understood it correctly, just
needed the confirmation. I'm really fired up and looking forward to
moving this into production!

if the recommendation/general consensus is to run backup on the passive db,
how do the logs get flushed? After all, aren't the logs being
written/committed to the active db's first?

Exchange knows what you are doing. The Exchange VSS writer on the passive
databases communicates to the Exchange VSS writer on the active databases to
tell what databases and log files got backed up and (within a checkpoint
interval) can be removed.
