Office 13 looks really good to me too. I'm impressed that it's not to
dramatically different from 2010 in terms of the ribbon etc. The learning curve
doesn't look too great between the two.

Cosmetic things like that will probably change once the code goes gold. One
of the things that is a bit annoying is the cursor is a bit delayed from my
fingers on the keyboard. Word 2010 was a bit more 'snappy' in that regard,
it didn't 'paint' the letters on the screen.

That's the Metro style. I don't expect it to change, even though I hate it
too.

Hooray, no more client RPC!
Sweet, simplified server roles (just 2)!
Umm...Outlook is no longer the Gold App?
Ugh...What's the secret way to get Outlook15 talking to Exchange 2k3?
Enough with the great, the good, the bad, and the ugly ;) If it's gonna be
POP/IMAP only for the ugly case, which
Well if it worked, it definitely would have been simple.
So in this case I would be looking at putting on a fresh install and using the
procedure described in Database Portability?

We're doing restores from tape. Initially when we brought this in we were told
that if we had DAGs that tape backups were unnecessary. This was explained as
if we had a 3 member DAG with at least one member off-site then the only thing
we had to worry about would be database corruption, and
I don't think that Outlook 15 can talk to Exchange 2003. I think it's blocked
internally, at least that was the discussion at one point. But it would have to
be using RPC/HTTP with encryption turned OFF, if it were to work at all.

Read through the online help files for Data Center Activation Mode. If one of

Let me share a story though - Exchange 2010 wasn't feature complete until SP1.
Exchange 2007 wasn't feature complete until SP1. Build expectations from
history.
You also can't migrate directly from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2013.
Thanks for the clarification.

I've installed Exchange on the server and the EMC brings up the names of my
original databases (on the DAGs, which of course are all failed). I can't
remove them using EMC or Powershell because Exchange thinks they're still out
there somewhere. I had to remove the server using adsiedit, so

Change of plan. What if I create a new CAS/HUB/Mailbox server with a new
mailbox and recovery database, and do a Dial Tone Recovery? That should work,
shouldn't it?

Michael - have you updated the blog on upgrading to SP2?
Is it still accurate to get to RU3?
Do I just go through the SP2 process - reboot and then apply RU3?
Are there any issues
Also - are there coexistence issues within a DAG on SP2RU3 and SP1RU5

No.
Stand up a new server on an isolated network having the same name as the
exchange server.
Install AD with a matching domain name.
Install Exchange with a matching organization name.
Create a matching mailbox database name (or a recovery mailbox DB - doesn't
matter).
