where I can LIST messages etc. However when I use RETR message number,
the command seems to hang, doesn't retrieve the message and eventually
quits
with connection to host lost.

Many thanks for the reply. I've tried stopping the Backup Agent Service.
However no luck. Just the same (50% usage). I'll certainly apply SP2 for
ARCServe again to see if this helps.

ARCServe Agent for Exchange Server Backup.
We are using ARCServe but I don't think we are using the Exchange Server
Agent. I cannot find the registry key that this article talks about.
Can anyone please help?

to blame for the server grinding to a halt. My server is running NT 4.0 SP6
with Exchange Server 5.5 SP3.
