I had the same thing happen, I got around it by doing the following;
1) Stop All Exchange Services.
2) Remove All Files in MDBData and Logfile Dir (priv, pub, and log
files).
3) Start Exchange Admin
Did you check the box for the databases in Exchange System Manager which
allows the database to be overwritten by a restore?

Simon, Another option you may want to consider is that BE can be restored
by using NTBackup. At least, last time I checked. Since all the MS
Whitepapers point to using NTBackup, it could make the restore scenario a
bit
.
