I think your defiantly dealing with some dimwits. I ran into the same thing
with earthlink. They have designed the border
router(s) so port 25 is closed to any outgoing traffic except from their
mail servers. When I asked if they had done this, I was told repeatedly that

Doesn't sympatico have an internal and external
address? Are they not doing a NAT type system? Or are you getting a clearly
public IP. If you are, you could try portscanning your pc and see what pops
up.
