I'm not sure if this is going to help, but I also had problems with my
CD-Rom when updating from 5.3 to 6.0. The change is that in 6.0 the
kernel uses DMA by default for CD-Roms, while in 5.3 it did not.
My problem was that my cd-rom was buggy and would crash the computer

OOPS! sorry about the last one.
if your cdrom went out, it may not have been seen by the kernel probing
at boot. Perhaps you have the master/slave jumper in the slave position
on the cdrom? I've seen them work without a master drive using the slave
jumper, but be erratic.
