I bought one of these modems and was even told by 3Com that it was a hardware
modem, but close physical inspection revealed that there wasn't actually a
controller on the card.
First, unfortunately most isp's are like that, but they should at least be
able to give you a dns number to use.

If you do not perform an updatedb command periodically, the database for
the locate command will not be very thorough in its regurgitation. I
find the locate command works so fast that its worth the wait for the
updatedb command to run and then use the locate command instead of find.

Figures, I'm fortunate to have an ISP that runs BSD on there servers, so
they have pretty good support for Linux; I've run into several dummies
though, that can't tell you the first thing! It's a wonder so many still
