you need an initrd file for your installation. boot with a floppy and
mount the root partition somewhere.
mkinitrd /boot/initrd_kernel_id.img kernel_id
example:
mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.17 2.2.17
look in your /lib/modules and /boot directories for a list of the
kernels that you have

If you have a seperate /home save it but format your other partitions and
run 7.2 as a fresh install.
KDE 2 and compliance standards directory structure changes in 7.2 will
cause to many problems if it is installed as an upgrade.
