On a chance, try rpm --rebuild (as root) and then run MandrakeUpdate,
from an xterm. Check for error messages. MandrakeUpdate does
occaisionallly screw up the rpm database when the downloads etc glitch.
I also noted that some time after the cups update, I got a message in
/var/log/messages sayi
