I don't know if you can force Linux to show you a true connect
speed or not, but if you are curious you can look in the modem
logs. 26.4 to 28.8 is a very normal connect speed with a 33.6 using
an ISP that is not digital. Even with digital you won't see much
difference maybe a bump
I just purchased a 3Com US Robotics 56K Faxmodem (V.90 and x2). My Mandrake
7.2 installation finds the modem and connects with it but connection is at
26400 baud.
It is not the phone lines because my old 33K modem (that it is supposed to
replace) connects at 115000. Could it be that the v.90
dialer.
