I'll have a look at echo $DISPLAY when I get back home. In the meantime
I've got a workaround, placing a script in ./kde/Autostart that basically
does
#!/bin/bash
xhost +
This allows all apps to work properly, but is really just addressing the
symptoms and not the cause of the problem.

I'm running Mandrake 7.2, and have just tried upgrading XFree to 4.0.3 and
KDE to 2.1.1. The packages I used for the upgrade come from APCmags
Advanced Linux Pocketbook (any Australians or New Zealanders on the list may
have seen this about). I don't doubt the legitimacy of the packages -
