I have exactly the same Notebook and the same problem
To use it I have :
1) installed Mandrake 8.0
2) installed Mandrake 8.1 making upgrade
3) select the old kernel 2.4.3 to start
The kernel 2.4.8 make a reset on the computer
just at the beginning ,
it shows 10 - 15 lines on the
