Hey,

Thanks a lot for answering my question. Didn't think anyone would answer it after this long. Yes, I had already figured out the relevant things a couple of days back and had it working. Thanks anyways.

Altough, The upgrade is working fine over the past 2 weeks. But, I still feel that a complete fresh install is always the best way to go. Maybe it's just pyschological !!

1. My laptop Compaq 12XL125 (30 Gb HDD, 192 Mb RAM with 8 Mb shared Video RAM) has the trident i7/DSTN graphics card. I always found that in Windows my laptop runs super smooth with the graphics but, in Linux it is pretty slow and draggy. Why?? According to XFree86, the "trident" driver is accelerated. But, it sure doesn't feel like it. My current resolution is 1024x768 with 16 bpp which gives bearable system (GUI) performance for now. I also found that on desktops or laptops with dedicated Graphics cards, Linux was super-duper fast !!! This is driving me crazy and I am thinking of buying a new laptop now.

2. Also, the laptop never shuts down completely !! it shuts down for a moment and the Hard disk starts up instantly without starting the computer. I have to manually shut the laptop. Looks like some Power management problem.

Any tips, suggestions, tweaks?

Subject: [expert] Mandrake 9.0 RC2 problems

Hi,

I just upgraded from Mandrake 8.2 to Mandrake 9.0 RC2.

1. Mandrake Control Center

[root@sandeepk sandeepk]# mcc
gdk-pixbuf library is not available at
/usr/lib/libDrakX/ugtk.pm line 762.
[root@sandeepk sandeepk]

2. rpmdrake

[root@sandeepk sandeepk]# rpmdrake
Base class package "URPM" is empty.
(Perhaps you need to 'use' the module which defines that package
first.) at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.0/urpm.pm line 5
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.0/urpm.pm line 5.
Compilation failed in require at
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.0/rpmdrake.pm line 26.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.0/rpmdrake.pm line 26.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/sbin/rpmdrake line 40.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/sbin/rpmdrake line 40.
[root@sandeepk sandeepk]#

Did you get this fixed?

You need to install (with "rpm -Uvh" ):
perl-URPM
urpmi
rpmdrake

Hope this help,

Bill Shirley

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Sandeep
