Hi,

I've been using Mandrake since version 6.0 or 6.1 I beleive. I really like
the distribution, especially the ease of installation. I had a few gripes and
problems with my most recent attempt.

1. First I tried to upgrade from 7.0->7.1. My distro of 7.0 was kept
up-to-date
with MandrakeUpdate. I got numerous "There was a problem installing xxxxxx.
Do you want to continue?" Looking in the logs it seemed I was getting a lot
of
I/O errors with CPIO. However, a fresh install gave no such errors,
suggesting
it wasn't the CD. I've also had no problems my hard drives. Finally, isn't
there a way to keep updates from taking 8 hours?

2. (K)DPMS was not available from the KDE Control center as before. I had to
look
long and hard to find it in the menu system. I'd suggest keeping it as part of
the KDE configuration tools.

3. I use "gv" as a postscript previewer. I seem to be having problems
launching
it from within netscape (I have to view a lot of postscript from the web). It
comes up with the right number of pages in a document, but I always get an
"interpreter failed in the main window" message. Executing "gv" on the file
that
is put in the /tmp directory works just fine. Going with the file navigation
tools and opening the file doesn't work (nor does it work with other files).
kghostview also fails. Somehow it seems gs isn't being run correctly since
when
I look at the processes, I don't see gs after spawning via netscape, but I do
when I run gv stand-alone.

4. I didn't choose an expert install, so I got XFree 3.3.6 by default. Is
there
documentation showing me how to switch to version 4.0? I have a Voodoo3 card
which appears to be the best supported card available under 4.0.

Keep up the good work. I plan to buy a boxed version of 7.1 as soon as it
hits
the store shelves.

Thank you,

Eric Vaandering
