One thing I spotted that I might question. Why is this dealing with irq
5? That would indicate a sound card to me. Modems are usually on IRQ 3
or 4 IIRC.

Well, standard _serial ports_ are usually using IRQ 3 or 4. Now if the
serial ports are not disabled in the BIOS
