To all who gave me suggestions on how to get my X working again, using the console, I say Thank you!
You folks are really great. I didn't expect to get so many replies. I guess the variety of answers I got goes to show the variety in preferences among Linux users. Maybe, just for fun, I should ask "Which is the best console editor?" ...The mail server would probably go up in smoke... Most of the suggestions I had used before, long ago, but I haven't had to use any of them in such a long time I couldn't remember the right command. Anyway, my X Windows is working fine again. And now... the winner... If any of you are interested, out of all the suggestions you gave me, the first one I tried was "setuptool". It worked like a charm.
