This is a complex problem, so be patient with my long-windedness please.

I upgraded my stock 7.2 system to kernel 2.4.1 recently. I'm having strange
problems with moving copying or downloading large files. After periods of
heavy disk activity, like copying several 100MB+ files, the montior goes
black, and after a few minutes X server resets itself. If I switch to the
text console, there will be a message like "[drm] freeing invalid context for
dead process (some PID)", and some letters will be corrupted. (like every
instance of the letter "E" will be replaced with a random pattern of white
pixels). This makes me suspect that somehow the IDE driver is corrupting
video RAM.

My system CPU is an AMD Athlon, Video is an AGP 3dfx Voodoo3, IDE controller
is the builtin controller on the VIA KX133 chipset, hard drive is a 30GB
Western Digital ATA/66 drive.

If anyone knows what is causing this and how to fix it, please help me out.
