At one time I knew the answer to this question but not anymore. When doing a rpm -ivh or -Uvh with or without --nodeps or --force I occasionally get the ; "directory not empty, cannot remove " messages. Ususally it doesn't appear to have any effect on things and I have also tried rm -rf the complaining directory and re-installing the new rpm. Same thing, it doesn't really seem to make any difference as to the functionality of the program in question.
