SOLVED!!!
It was reporting:
ftp: connect: Connection refused
ftp> bye
I played with xinetd and looked in /var/log/syslog
I got among many more errors:
Dec 6 09:28:40 athlon xinetd[27346]: socket creation failed (Address
family not supported by protocol (errno = 97)). service = ftp
