Just a shot in the dark, but try: rpm --rebuilddb
It is actually a good command to run after you do a lot of rpm installs
and/or uninstalls.

Ugh. I never upgrade anymore. The process is excrutiatingly slow. It is
much faster to just install anew (leaving your /home and, perhaps, /usr/local
alone - on their own partitions). I never really lose anything doing it this
way and save a ton of time and pain.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "all the time". I have upgraded before
without problem. The only issue with upgrading vs clean install I have come
across is it is logrithmically slower to upgrade than to simply do a
reinstall. It takes frickin' forever to upgrade.

I agree, if the only solution to get 8.1 running is an install, then the CD should
check the value of /etc/mandrake-release and only permit an install for all non 8.1
systems.
