I believe it is. But i know it's not so difficult
setting up OOo too. I have no problem to print
a document on fax using either koffice or OOo.
I also fixed the problem that allow me to use
kprinter instead of perl_cups

I've never tried this, but couldn't you just set up your printer in
OpenOffice to be:
kprinter --stdin
and then just "print" to the kprinter fax device?
