Thanks to all who offered help on my situation. To let all know , I got kernel-2.4.17-8mdk.rpm and the header and doc rpm's at kernel .org and did a simple install and FINALLY got it to work just dandy! ;-) had to do some editing of lilo.conf but now I have both the stock 2.4.3-20 and the 2.

Hi, Any Mandrake prepared kernel from www.rpmfind.net (search for 'kernel'), will be fine for 8.x I guess. Download it from there and install the rpm, it is the easiest way. Then say to lilo or grub where the kernel is, add a new entry and make it the default, it should be easy with the Mandrake
