Is it crashing when at dvd menu or while at film? To play menus you need
xine-dvdnav plugin.
I have a Mandrake 8.2 and see DVD with no problems at all. If I do (as
root):
rpm -qa | grep xine
I get the following list of installed packages:

libxine0-0.9.13-3plf
xine-ui-0.9.13
