Some researchers believe that the original Sphinx was a crouching Anubis.  For 
one thing, the present human head doesn't match the size of the Sphinx's body, 
leading researchers that a human head was carved out later.
 Another possibility is a lion, but Anubis provides a better hypothesis, 
matching the popularity of Anubis Guardians in the Egyptian culture.
