120 members of a Wagon Train of emigrants from the Eastern U.S. were massacred culminating on 9-11-1857 by the Nauvoo Legion, a Mormon Militia led by Wm. H. Dame, Isaac Haight, and John D. Lee. They were masquerading as Indians. The settlers were passing through Mormon territory. Scholars debate whether Brigham Young had anything to do with it. John D. Lee was the only member of the Nauvoo Legion brought to justice - hung in 1877.
