Obviously, with the success of "True Blood" on TV and
the awful "Twilight" movies, vampires are big business.
It's as if they're everywhere. The question pondered
by this Australian-made movie is, "What if they *were*
everywhere?" What if a plague of some kind had turned
all but a handful of humans into vampires?

Well, society would adapt. It's just what societies do.
Night dwelling would be the norm, and your local Star-
bucks would offer 20% human blood in your latte. The
remaining humans would be "farmed" to supply the blood.
In other words, it would be the *inverse* of the trad-
itional vampire saga -- instead of the humans being the
norm and the vampires being the outsiders, the vamps
would run the world and the humans would become an
ever-dwindling food supply. In "Daybreakers," it's 2019
and the food supply -- meaning the number of remaining
humans -- is about to run out.

This "flip flop" of the traditional vampire tale actually
makes for an interesting movie. OK performances by Ethan
Hawke, Sam Neill, Willem Dafoe, and newcomer Isabel Lucas.
Yes, it's just as gory and bloodspattery as any other
vampire movie, but it's a completely new "take" on the
concept, and after 88 years of vampire movies that were
essentially the same old same old, that at least doesn't
suck.
