President remembes Tagore and Patanjali

Seoul: The prophetic words of Rabindranath Tagore and Maharishi Patanjali echoed in the National Assembly of South Korea today during the course of an address by President A P J Abdul Kalam.

Recalling the Nobel Laureate, Dr Kalam began his address, quoting Tagore, who had stated in 1929 that " In the Golden Age of Asia, Korea was one of its lamp bearers and that lamp is waiting to be lighted once again for the illumination of the east".

This led to be a great applause from the members of the National Assembly who listened to him patiently throughout his 20-minute address.

Dr Kalam quoted Maharishi Patanjili's words in Yoga Sutra that dormant forces, faculties and talents come alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far, than you ever dreamt yourself to be.

The essence of his address, the first here by an Indian President, was that quite India's natural, human resources and huge market and Koria capital, technology and entrepreneurial skills, both countries should design and develop products for civilian application in national and international markets.

He said the Indian economy was in an ascending phase for the past decade particularly in GDP growth and foreign exchange reserves.

India has core competence in areas such as IT, agriculture, industry, space, pharma and service sectors. India has a vision for the nation to become a developed country before 2020, which involves rising the GDP from the existing 7 to 10 per cent and sustaining it for a decade.

He identified five areas for an integrated action in agriculture and food processing, education and heathcare, I T and Communication, Infrastructure development and self reliance in critical technologies and strategic industries..

Dr Kalam said India has international technology partnership in Brahmos -- a joint venture with Russia -- and Pan African e-network, connectivity solution with 53 Pan African countries for providing tele education, tele medicine and e-government services..

In Asia region, both countries have established certain core competence in different areas, Dr kalam noted. ''If we can pool these comptence, we will be delivering a fine performance for the world market. Hence it is necessary to establish an institutional mechanism called World Knowledge Platform which will eanble joint design, development, cost effective production and marketing of knowledge products.

The President emphasised the need for enhancing people to people contacts at various levels - - parliamentarians, business persons, artistes, academicians and scientists.
