Prof. Alvin Plantinga (philosophy, Univ of Notre Dame) , takes on the problem of evil in this 12 min video. I just learned about him yesterday but from Wiki and Youtube I'd say he has an RC background, rather than Fundamentalist. He accepts evolution but says it could be guided. The narrator brings up atheist arguments (also in the 6 min video "Reasons for God" - where he mentions the Four Horsemen of Atheism: Dawkins, Dennett, Hitchens (deceased) and Harris.) He's fairly good a countering the atheist arguments (except for the problem of evil. Refer to previous posts on Epicurus - God is supposedly Omnipotent, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, etc, so why evil). At about 11:30 the narrator asks him if any of the atheist arguments are effective. He says no but that he finds the problem of evil "disturbing". My take: somewhat effective in rebutting the atheist arguments but very feeble when it comes to the positive assertion of God's existence, apart from his own circular arguments (God exists because I believe it and the atheists haven't disproven it....something like that). Also, on several occasions he lapses into the " Argument from Ignorance"" of which the "God of the Gaps" is a variant: i.e. that for example, the problem of evil is not really a problem since God being Mysterious may have reasons of His own - and we with our puny minds are incapable of ultimately understanding Him.. His version of "God" also completely avoids the "God" (YHVH) of the Old Testament, in favor of a God more like that of Aquinas. My view: Sorry Alvin. If you're taking a Christian pov, you can't trash the Old Testament and the Angry Vindinctive "God" who wiped out the indigenous peoples of the Middle East to make way for the wandering Tribes kicked out of Egypt. It's a package deal.
