As you mentioned, this type of marriage arrangement can get complicated. This
probably is one of the reasons why polygamy was outlawed. But the
fundamentalist Mormons are still at it. Maybe it works for them since polygamy
is in context with their religious belief.

In Canada they've been struggling with this a couple of decades, long before
gay marriage was legalized. The government has not wanted to prosecute
polygamists because they have legal opinions that say the law would not survive
a constitutional challenge on the basis of freedom of religion.
