Once in the 1980s I was driving south on
Route 1 just a few miles north of Fairfield.
I was coming into town after an absence,
and was excited about the prospect of
seeing friends and getting into the Fairfield
groove. In my haste to get where I was going,
I pulled out to pass a car in front of me doing
the strict speed limit. As I pulled up alongside
him, he sped up so that I couldn't get ahead
of him. My old four-cylinder Volvo wasn't up
to the task of racing this big American car, so
I let it go and dropped back.

The funny thing was, the driver of the other car
was a man who must have been in his sixties,
and his three passengers were all ladies of his
age. I glanced over to see they were upset about
his driving. He was bent over his steering wheel
with a defiant look of anger on his face, while the
women around him were talking and gesticulating
with no small measure of disapproval. Think of it:
I was zipping along in the same lane as oncoming
traffic, had there been any, and our line of sight
was getting shorter thanks to a looming hill. Not
a safe situation.

Of a lifetime of driving in Iowa, I had never had
such a thing happen. Only in Fairfield. But I don't
attribute it to the place. I attribute it to my
inability to do anything that's not life-supporting.
