I'm thankful for family, friends and good food except for rutabagas, a
traditional tuber cooked with bacon my family insists we must have for
Thanksgiving, a stinky, bitter dish, which I gladly prep and will not
eat, but grateful to God it makes them happy.

Ode to the Rutabaga

Thanksgiving Day is not complete

Without my family's special treat.

In Britain, "Swedes" is what they're called,

While here, when from the ground they're hauled,

The name they're given in the store

Is "rutabaga", nothing more.

I can't imagine turkey dinner

Without this mashed, pale orange winner.

Turkey dressing, pumpkin pie,

Whipped potatoes (minus eyes),

Yams and crans and veggie salad,

Good enough to write a ballad,

All delicious, it is true,

But as for me (though not for you),

The food that makes Thanksgiving great:

A pile of rutabagas on my plate!
