At the reception following the wedding between the Prince Charles and
Camilla Parker Bowles, the wedding cake was, expectedly, organic.
Included
on the cake was a crest of the Duchy of Cornwall--Charles' estate as
well as
the inspiration for his Duchy Originals line of organic cookies and
bread.

1. USA: Dr Schneider elected Fellow of American College of Cardiology
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?art=11122912866478508
Robert Schneider, director of the University's Institute for Natural
Medicine and Prevention, was recently honoured by being inducted as a
Fellow
of the American College of Cardiology, the foremost professional
designation
for heart specialists in the U.S.

'I've been researching, practicing, and teaching Maharishi's
principles
of
applied preventive cardiology for almost 25 years, so it was natural
to
be
awarded the recognition of the ACC,' Dr. Schneider said. 'It was a
recognition of the groundbreaking accomplishments of the Institute
team
in
the area of prevention-oriented natural medicine.'

2. USA: University partnership to examine healthy heart treatments,
Transcendental Meditation included
The National Institutes of Health awarded $6 million to a partnership
between Emory University and Morehouse School of Medicine. The
five-year
partnership will focus on eliminating cardiovascular health problems.
The
study will be divided into three main projects, one of them
investigating
Transcendental Meditation as a means to reduce blood pressure.

3. USA: Articles on Maharishi University's brain conference appearing
throughout the US
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/education-news-a.html?
art=11119452291445659
Maharishi University of Management's emphasis on tracking brain
development
changes in students, and the university's recent brain conference,
which
highlighted the damaging effects most educational institutions have
on
the
learning capacity of their students, has gained national recognition.
Newspapers across the country have posted the original St Louis Post
Dispatch article, 'University will wire students' brains to track
change'.

4. USA: Organic growers patiently strive for state's largest
greenhouse
operation

Maharishi Vedic Organic Farms in Maharishi Vedic City, Iowa, is
making
plans
to expand their 51,800 square-foot greenhouse. In addition to growing
organic produce, the greenhouse will also support 500 'Vedic
scholars'
from
India.

The organic farm started offering all-organic produce last spring.
Now
it is
shipping out around 2,000 pounds of produce a week to stores and
restaurants
in Iowa City, Des Moines, and Chicago. The next goal is to have a 70
to
80
acre greenhouse built by 2008. This would be the largest greenhouse
in
the
state of Iowa.

The profits from the sales of the organic vegetables are going
towards
the
travel and living expenses of the Vedic scholars. Now the city is
looking
for financing for the greenhouse project.

5. USA: New brain centre will pioneer research on higher consciousness
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/education-news-a.html?
art=111039143412362923

According to Fred Travis, director of the new Centre for Brain,
Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management,
their
new EEG system, called ActiveTwo and produced in Germany by BioSemi,
uses
'active sensors' so that researchers can record EEG while subjects are
moving—including Yogic Flying.

Dr. Travis said that the system includes sophisticated analysis
software to
evaluate EEG patterns from many different angles. 'It allows us to map
coherence, something we have not been able to do before.'

The technology is highly portable. Dr. Travis recently took a system
to
Norway for research on Olympic gold medallists. The equipment fitted
into a
carry-on bag and went with him on the plane.

6. Harnessing the power of nature and natural medicine to achieve
extraordinary health

A new book about research-proven natural approaches to prevention of
breast
cancer is based on the principles of Maharishi Vedic Approach to
Health.

'Waking the Warrior Goddess: Dr Christine Horner's Program to Protect
Against and Fight Breast Cancer', includes chapters on Transcendental
Meditation, Maharishi Rejuvenation treatments, Maharishi Vedic Organic
Agriculture, Maharishi Sthapatya Veda and Amrit Kalash.

7. AUSTRALIA: Smoking rate hits all time low
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?art=11129202792924715

Australia's smoking rate has hit an all-time low with barely one in
six
adults smoking. A decade ago it was one in four. Also, use of illicit
drugs
has fallen, according to a national survey conducted in 2004. Health
Minister Tony Abbott said, 'Our smoking rates are dropping to
ever-lower
levels and we are starting to win the war on drugs. Very good news.'

8. BELGIUM: European Commission seeks chemical testing
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?art=11126339294368429
The European Commission plans to introduce legislation requiring
manufacturers to do health tests on thousands of chemicals used in
products
ranging from household cleaners to car parts.

Under the proposals, responsibility for testing chemicals would shift
from
governments to manufacturers who would be required to provide safety
data
for some 30,000 chemicals.

9. USA: Ecstasy is not the answer
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?art=11126327174223828
The Navy Times, Army Times, and Air Force Times published a letter in
their
April 4 issue about the Transcendental Meditation (TM) Programme as an
effective approach for treating Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome
(PTSD).
The
letter was written by two members of the Centre for Advanced Military
Science (CAMS), Drs Ken Walton and Jim Fleming.

The letter was in response to a previous article which proposed using
the
drug Ecstasy to treat PTSD. Walton and Fleming said, 'We were
shocked.
Why
support investigation of a brain-damaging drug, when a safe and
effective
approach is already available?'

'It's high time we acknowledge that virtually all drugs have negative
side
effects and look more closely at the human potential for healing
ourselves.
Research now shows that stress-reduction approaches can be effective
for
treating hypertension and heart disease as well as anxiety,
depression,
and
substance abuse. Among these approaches, meditation has emerged as
most
effective for many outcomes. Within the different types of
meditation,
the
Transcendental Meditation Programme has been researched most and has
shown
the largest effects in comparative studies.'

10. USA: Nine US states limit local GM regulations
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/environmental-news-a.html?
art=1112358074582903
Maharishi Vedic City is becoming nationally known as a champion of
organic
agriculture and, together with other leaders and organizations, is
working
to promote the rights of local governments to prohibit genetically
modified
seeds. The issue is being taken up by both organic farmers and states'
rights advocates.

11. PHILIPPINES: Better Philippine agriculture with technology from
China
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/environmental-news-a.html?
art=1112382435151467
1
China has developed an organic technology called microbial soil
rebuilding,
a technique that uses natural bacteria to consume soil pollutants.
This
soil
technology will help boost Philippine agriculture by cleaning up the
country's chemically polluted soil seven times faster than traditional
methods.

12. USA: New Health Secretary Leavitt sets goals
The new US Health and Human Services secretary pledged his department
will
work to help keep Americans healthy. 'Five thousand days from now,
you'll
see a clear priority toward prevention in that prevention is clearly
as
much
a priority as healing,' said Health Secretary Mike Leavitt.

13. USA: Government recommends eating whole grains
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?art=11121197453896885
Advice in the government's new dietary guidelines is to eat three
servings
of whole grains each day to reduce the risk of heart disease and type
2
diabetes.

14. USA: February Brings Great Upsurge of Media Coverage
http://istpp.org/news/2005_02.html
Thanks to the outstanding work of Dr. John Hagelin's national media
team at
the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy, media
coverage
of
Maharishi's Consciousness-Based programs resulted in hundreds of
simultaneous reports published in prestigious national and
international
newspapers and journals.

TM and education: The International Herald Tribune, a publication of
the New
York Times, featured a comprehensive article on the benefits of the
Transcendental Meditation program in education. Titled "Meditation
Helps
Students," the article appeared in a special education supplement and
contrasted with many accompanying reports on the failures of modern
education.

TM and health: The American Journal of Hypertension published new
research
showing that TM reduces high blood pressure more effectively than
progressive muscle relaxation or health education, and also reduces
the
use
of antihypertensive medication (to read the abstract, click here).
These
findings are especially significant because cardiovascular disease,
for
which hypertension is a risk factor, is the nation's number one
killer.

Several national news services covered the release of this new
research,
including the Associated Press, Reuters, HealthDay, and Knight-
Ridder.
As a
result, news of this research appeared in hundreds of magazines and
newspapers across the country, including Newsweek, Forbes, the
Washington
Post, the Los Angeles Times, Newsday, the San Francisco Chronicle,
the
Miami
Herald, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the
Sacramento Bee, the Kansas City Star, and the Fort Worth Star-
Telegram.
The
story also received extensive television coverage, with reports on
CBS
TV's
"Health Watch" and ABC News.

Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture: The Des Moines Register
published
a
very positive front-page article in its Agriculture section
describing
the
operation of Maharishi Vedic Organic Farms in Maharishi Vedic City,
Iowa.
The story, entitled "Undercover Crops: Organic Growers Patiently
Strive
for
State's Largest Greenhouse Operation," shows how this initiative is
transforming agricultural production for the entire Midwest and is
also
producing a very high quality of food.

The Raj: Iowa Public Television's popular show "Living in Iowa" aired
a
nine-minute report about The Raj, America's premier health resort in
Maharishi Vedic City, Iowa. The report detailed the Maharishi Vedic
Approach
to Health and cited the Raj as among the foremost health spas in the
world.

15. USA: Exercise may help in treating depression
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?
art=111097013120451615

Though there's no definitive research showing exercise by itself can
cure
depression, many mental health experts agree that it has positive
mental
benefits and can be a useful tool in overall therapy.

16. INDIA: Vegetarianism can prevent heart attacks
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?
art=111079662317610032

Times of India reported that more and more people in India are
becoming
vegetarian for spiritual and environmental purposes. According to one
estimate, India has the largest number of vegetarians. Medical
experts
feel
that a vegetarian diet can prevent certain heart disorders, cancer,
arthritis, and Parkinson's disease.

17. USA: Test could be predictor of heart disease
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?
art=111090862019026146

A simple and inexpensive test for elevated white blood cell counts
could be
used to predict heart disease, a study of more than 66,000 women
suggests.

The study adds to the growing body of evidence that inflammation
plays
a
role in strokes and heart attacks, perhaps by weakening blood vessels
and
causing fatty buildups inside them to break loose and create a
blockage.

19. GERMANY: India wins neem patent case and blocks biopiracy
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/government-news-a.html?
art=111035987212030880

In the European Patent Office in Munich the revocation of a patent
for
the
use of neem as a fungicide was upheld today. Though a patent was
granted in
1995 to the US Department of Agriculture and the chemical
multinational
W.R.
Grace, Indian farmers already have a long tradition of using the oil
extracted from the margosa (neem) seeds to prevent fungus.

This outcome of the case ensures that traditional knowledge can no
longer be
threatened by such patents.

20. USA: South Beach diet takes aim at school

A study involving 3,000 students is underway by the research centre
founded
by Dr Arthur Agatston. The goal of the study is to discover whether
school
cafeterias are capable of serving more nutritious food, whether kids
will
eat it, and whether their health will improve

21. USA: A movement toward 'natural family living'
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/cultural-news-a.html?
art=11101329629363481

The concept of 'natural family living' is becoming popular throughout
the
US. More and more parents are turning to fresh organic foods, natural
medicine, and trying to spend more time with their children.
The Puget Sound, Washington, is an example. According to a
Philadelphia
newspaper article, the area is full of environmentally-conscious
citizens
and locally grown organic food. It is also home to Bastyr University
and its
many naturopathic physicians.

22. USA: Dairy farmers who milk the past
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/environmental-news-a.html?
art=1110050523846323
1

In the past decade more than 50 per cent of dairy farms have gone out
of
business in the United States; but recently a new trend is reviving
small
family dairies. Across the country, farmers are returning to their
more
traditional roots, bottling their hormone-free milk in recyclable
glass
bottles, and even in some cases, delivering the milk to their
customers. And
for the first time in years, they're making a profit.

23. INDIA: UK National Health Service doctors learn about Ayurveda
http://www.expressindia.com/about/feedback.html?
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
ia.com

A team of doctors from the UK National Health Services, sponsored by
the
Prince of Wales Foundation, visited a Government Ayurvedic Dispensary
to
learn the intricacies of ayurveda.

Team member Dr Michael Dixon said, '' We want to learn about ayurvedic
medicines so that we can provide more options to our patients and
give
mixed
recommendations. We get many patients who ask for alternative
medicines
because of the multiple side effects of the western system of
medicine".

A ''highly impressed'' Dr Claudia Clapton said that the purpose of
the
visit
was to understand ayurveda and find out ways and means to incorporate
it in
the regimen of health services. The doctors' reports will be given to
the
complementary medicine unit of the NHS.

24. ITALY: Parliamentary delegation meets India's Health and Family
Welfare
Minister

An Italian Parliamentary delegation discussed possible areas of
cooperation
in traditional systems of medicine with the Indian Health and Family
Welfare
Minister Dr. Ramadoss.

Dr. Ramadoss gave an overview of steps being taken by his Ministry to
integrate traditional and modern systems of medicine. The Minister
said
that
India was re-inventing the old systems in keeping with the overall
trend of
the world towards naturopathy and organic practices.

The leader of the Italian delegation sought the help of the Indian
government for training and teaching of Ayurveda and other traditional
systems in his country.

25. USA: Black farmers bring fresh produce to low-income black
families
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/environmental-news-a.html?
art=1109956056676840
8

Leon Musgraves drives 120 miles to market from his five-acre farm in
the San
Joaquin Valley. He sees his mission as part nutrition counsellor, part
purveyor of organic produce that's hard to come by in an area with
only
one
grocery store and fast-food restaurants galore.

'I've seen the African-American people's health declining,' said
Musgraves,
58. 'It's not having access to healthy food, to a good lifestyle.'

Leon works his land by hand, without help or a tractor, and knows the
pressures small farmers—especially black farmers—face from industrial
agriculture and a global market. In California, where farming
generates
$27.8 billion a year, there are 84,000 farms, but fewer than 380 black
farmers.

26. INDIA: Political commitment to rural India
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/environmental-news-a.html?
art=1109676180286637
4

The Indian parliament announced that the rural sector will receive a
large
share of India's 2005 budget. Finance Minister Mr P. Chidambaram
outlined
government goals 'To bring an additional 10 million hectares under
assured
irrigation, to connect all villages with a population of 1,000 (500 in
hilly/tribal areas) with roads, to construct 6 million additional
houses for
the poor, to provide drinking water to 74,000 habitants that are
uncovered,
to reach electricity to the remaining 125,000 villages, and offer
power
connection to 23 million households, to give telephone connectivity
to
the
remaining 66,822 villages.'

27. INDIA: Medicines made from cow urine and dung
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?art=11097845144267816

The Bharatiya Janata Party are promoting cow products that many
Indians
believe have great therapeutic value.

A stall at their headquarters showcases more than two dozen tonics,
potions,
pills and a line of cosmetics. The products are sold under the brand
name
Goratna, or 'jewels of the cow.'

The Goratna offerings use five key cow products—butter, milk, curd,
urine
and dung. Purushottam Toshniwal, the general secretary of the
cooperative
that manufactures the cosmetics, said workers there followed a 'solid
scientific process' based on India's ancient herbal remedies, known as
ayurveda.

28. USA: Healing Profile: Rogers Badgett
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?art=11097886104536018

Healing Lifestyles and Spas magazine featured an interview with Rogers
Badgett, director and founder of The Raj, Maharishi Ayurveda Health
Centre,
explaining how the negative effects of stress and environmental
toxins
can
be addressed through the holistic approaches of Maharishi Ayurveda.

He explained that, in addition to the traditional purification
processes of
Ayurveda and the Transcendental Meditation Programme, The Raj offers
Maharishi Vedic Vibration Therapy, Yoga, and 'healthy-building
syndrome', or
Maharishi Sthapatya Veda. He noted that all of these approaches used
together produce a dramatic transformation in the health of guests at
the
Raj over a short period of time.

29. DENMARK: 'Rats!' say conventional food aficionados
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?art=11097849904285736

A study published on the Danish Research Centre for Organic Farming
web
site
found that rats fed a diet of organic food were healthier than rats
fed
the
same foods that were grown with chemicals. Although both groups of
rats
received the same levels of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fat,
protein,
and calories, the rats fed the organic diet had better immunity and
lower
body fat.

Researchers noted another difference. 'Rats are active at night, and
there
were no differences between the dietary groups with respect to
activity
at
night,' they said. 'However, during daytime, when the rats are
supposed
to
rest, our data indicated that rats fed on the organic diet were more
relaxed
than rats fed on other diets.'

30. GERMANY: BioFach showcases worldwide growth of organics
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/environmental-news-a.html?
art=1109682662289473
2

This year, BioFach, the world's largest organics fair, was bigger
than
ever,
with 1,900 exhibitors from 70 countries and more than 30,000 buyers.
Every
continent was represented, with exhibitions from Japan, South America,
Africa, Australia, Canada, and the USA.

BioFach celebrated Brazil as the 'Country of the Year' for its
leadership in
organic agriculture. Certified organic farmland in Brazil has
increased
from
276,000 hectares in 2001 to 800,000 hectares in 2005, with 19,000
certified
organic producers.

Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture and Maharishi Ayur-Veda had
attractive
stands at the show. At the Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture stand,
a
constant stream of buyers sampled melons, honey, and mustard, and
refreshed
themselves with Vata, Pitta, or Kapha teas while placing wholesale
orders
for an array of Maharishi Ayur-Veda products.

31. SWITZERLAND: Global anti-tobacco treaty takes effect
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?art=11096122341958658

A World health Organisation global anti-tobacco treaty aims to
substantially
reduce the number of deaths from tobacco-related illness—like cancer
and
heart disease—which the WHO estimates kill one smoker every 6.5
seconds.

32. USA: Meditation may cut future heart disease risks
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?art=11096149592125433

FoxNews.com reported that the Transcendental Meditation Programme 'is
good
for your health, even if you are a teenager'. The article focused on a
Medical College of Georgia study on African-American 16-year-old
girls
with
high blood pressure.

After four months, the group that began the Transcendental Meditation
technique 'improved significantly' in terms of blood vessel function.
The
other group given standard health education did not show the same
positive
results.

33. USA: Ayurveda the latest darling of holistic healing
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?
art=110927086343123534

Ayurveda, the original science of health, is becoming more popular.
Increased publicity, books, and positive testimonials from
celebrities
and
the general public have brought Ayuveda into the mainstream of
holistic
healing.

Today, the National Ayurvedic Medical Association has nearly 400
members,
compared to 95 when it was founded in 2000; and there are 30
institutions in
the United States where students can learn ayurvedic skills. Ayurveda
treatments are also becoming common at spas and yoga studios.

34. INDIA: Ayurvedic approach to beauty: Ayurvedic concepts

35. USA: Organic produce deliveries tap into consumers' desire for
convenience, health
http://www.globalgoodnews.com/environmental-news-a.html?
art=1109008376392007
90

Since founding the organic produce delivery company Pioneer Organics
in
1997, Ronny Bell has seen his customer list lengthen from six to more
than
4,000 clients in the Puget Sound region and more recently in
Portland,
Ore.
It's a testament to the growing number of people who seek organic
produce
and natural foods, but wish to avoid lottery-style shopping trips for
quality goods.

Despite the failure of mainstream grocery-delivery services, more and
more
companies like Bell's are successfully operating around the country,
including in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and New York City.

36. Transcendental Meditation in the global media

37. USA: Boaters may be turning to vegetables to run their engines.

TransMontaigne, one of the largest fuel terminal operators at Port
Everglades, Florida are offering biodiesel products. The fuel, made
from
soybeans or vegetable oil, is a cleaner-burning alternative to
petroleum-based diesel.

Proponents say it works in any diesel engine with few or no
modifications
and can be used in pure form or blended with petroleum diesel. A new
federal
tax incentive gives up to 20 cents per gallon to blenders of the fuel.

Dancing, singing, eating vegetables and positive thinking were a few
of
the
secrets to long life revealed by a dozen Cubans who met Wednesday in
a
rare
gathering of 100-somethings.

The men and women were invited to describe their daily diets and
habits
at a
meeting of the 120 Year Club, a Cuban group whose members are
convinced
many
people can live to a similar age by changing their lifestyles.

''The whole world could satisfactorily live 120 years,'' said Dr.
Eugenio
Selman, the club's director and Castro's personal physician.

But to do so, he said, required six things: motivation to live,
appropriate
diet, medical attention, intense physical activity, cultural
activities
and
a healthy environment.
